The first step was to determine what count of even weave red linen was available. Once knowing that, I would be able to figure out the thickness of the silk thread and the size of the grid for the charted design.
I decided on Wichelt-Permin 32 count even weave linen in Christmas Red. This would allow up to 16 stitches per inch, which I hoped would be granular enough for the wreath to be recognizable. I ordered it through Amazon, but it's also available through Etsy and other online stores.
I knew that the Au Ver a Soie® Soie Gobelins thread that I have been using on 45 count linen for the heraldic pouch would be too fine for this, so I was going to have to figure out what silk to use. Here is a blog I like that talks about the different kinds of silk embroidery thread:
https://www.needlenthread.com/2007/07/embroidery-threads-comparison-of.html
Based on this, I decided to go with the slightly thicker Soie Perlee. It's a twisted filament silk, 3-ply instead of the 2-ply I had been working with.
Since this was going to be green on red, I thought I would try outlining the wreath with metallic gold. I had never worked with metallic thread, so I wasn't sure what sort of thread to get. Luckily, that blog had another post about using metallic (but not actual metal) embroidery thread:
https://www.needlenthread.com/2017/06/thread-talk-the-metallics-you-want-to-use.html
Based on this, I decided to go with Au Ver a Soie® Metallic Braid, which is 65% cupro (rayon) and 35% metallized polyester.
I purchased these from https://hoopandframe.com/. It took almost exactly two spools of the green and one spool of the gold. (Of course, I had bought three times that amount of both.)
I had buckram left over from the first hat and white linen of various weights to choose from for the crown of the cap.
Linen and Buckram
For the ermine spots on the original hat, I used black facetted teardrops and facetted round beads from https://www.firemountaingems.com/. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find the same teardrop beads, so I decided to harvest the beads from the first one.
So that there was something new, I replaced the top bead in each spot with a purple goldstone facetted round bead.
